What I Learned Last Year About IELTS Essay SamplesLast year, I wrote about IELTS Essay Examples that You Can Use and Sources of IELTS Proofreading. In that article, I talked about many of the methods I use to help me proofread and then edit my own IELTS essay samples. This year, I will continue with a look at these methods and a couple of other resources that you can use to help you.The first source is a list of questions you can ask yourself when reading your own essay. For example, have you read it aloud before? Is there anything in it that you don't understand? Have you asked your friends and family for some additional information? Are there any parts of the essay that you feel are too general?The second source is to find an essay sample that focuses on the actual idea of the essay. I recently went through a few of the essays from the 2020 IELTS exam. I noticed that most of them were quite similar and I didn't really understand what the focus was of the essay. The other option is to go back and read the essay under a different heading.There are many online resources that will offer you essay samples that are based on current events or by people from other countries. Although these may be a little easier to read than a more generalized essay, they do not offer the same level of detail.In addition, I found that the exercises given by a native speaker or someone who is teaching a new language skills will be a lot more helpful. I did an online exercise this year to help me learn Spanish and it really helped me understand the actual language and to apply the techniques that I had learned.Another advantage of a traditional essay is that the number of words can help you figure out if there are any key words in the sentence that is being used incorrectly. On the other hand, in a Google essay, there are no spaces between words so all you can see is word by word. That may be a better way to check for grammatical mistakes but you can never really tell with online essay s.Finally, if you want to really understand the essay and get a sense of what it was trying to communicate, it is a good idea to try to extract some specific information from the essay. If you want to know what kind of book the essay was written in, ask the test taker. Or, if you are having trouble, try to read it out loud or simply ask the person giving the test what they are trying to say.It is easy to find a variety of essay samples that are based on current events and that will help you work on editing and proofreading your own essay. However, a good place to start is with a native speaker of a foreign language or someone who is teaching you new skills. These are the people who can really help you be an IELTS scholar.
